I am attempting to offer an educational class for kids at my farm about the history of horses of native americans. What I'd ultimately like to do is teach the kids what different symbols meant and have them paint one of our horses and "prepare them for battle". Is there a paint that's safe to use, washable, and non-toxic?? Is tempera paint an option? I've heard its safe but it can stain. anyone have suggestions??

We have used finger paint (the stuff kids use) in the past when we decorated a horse.

On the darker horses we always used the cheap non-toxic white shoe polish. It's water based and washes right out and besides it's easy to "draw" with the sponge top.
