i have a horse that throws his head alot so i have tried using a tie-down on him but then he just does not want to move.... i have also used a running martingale, which helps a little, but he still is able to throw his head... does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you ever tried a PeeWee bit?? They're not cheap but they are awesome! They cause no pain to your horse and no confusion. You can use it 3 different ways. It certainly took care of my head tosser and i had also tried a tie down with her. My 2 1/2 yr old makes ya think she's dead broke!

How long have you had your horse? Maybe the past owner was not light in the hands or used a severe bit. Either way you need to go back to the basics. You need to go in a ring not the field where your horse might want to go back all the time. You need to do many, many circles with your hands down and quiet. You need to get your horse relaxed. But nothing more than a snffle bit. No chains, or martingales, of tie downs. If this is not a medical problem or teeth issue, it is a training issue. It's going to take many gentle hours. And lighter in the hands the better. If the head comes up, losen your rains if the horse dpeeds up , turn him in a circle till the head comes down, using ONE rein... As soon as the head comes down, release. Work on both sides equally. Do not tiedown, he will not learn and you might flip him. You can also google, Giving To The Bit.
