I Have A 6 Month Old Colt That Wont Back Up At All, Not Even When Trying Him In The Pasture. I Push The Leadrope Back And Tell Him Back, Back And He Wont Even Budge. What Should I Do.

If you push the horse will push. If you lean into him, he will lean into you. Try facing backward and focusing on something well beyond his rump. With your lead in your right hand, use the index finger and thumb of your left hand and not a pinch, but gently roll the skin on the point of the shoulder while at the same time put a little pressure on the halter. The moment he even shifts his weight back, immediately release the halter pressure and your fingers. Repeat and after a few times he will take a step. Your focus behind him tell him that is where he is to go.

I've trained 2 week olds up to 20 year olds! You should stand at your colts shoulder facing the same direction as he is. Hold the lead line close to his halter on whichever side your on. Ask him to back up by pulling back and slightly down on the line. If he does not respond quickly walk backwards, pulling his head around with you. This will force his feet to move...Even though not in the direction you originally asked...He must move his feet or he will fall! Horses don't like to spend the day circling, So pull him around and around till he wonders what is going on... start again, always ask for the back first..Maybe even shaking the line under his chin quickly so he needs to raise his head to get away. Then turn him around again. He will start to back after a few attempts at this. Dosen't take long! As soon as he backs up ONE SINGLE step in the direction you asked release all commands and praise and pet him.! No grain or treats. Praise i the reward! Eventually ask for more steps! Soon he will back when you do!
