My horse has been diagnosed with upward fixation of the Patella (Right side).
I had two different vets examine him and they both came up with the same diagnosis. However they both had different forms of treatment they recommened.
1. Estrogen Injections
2. Medial Patellar Ligament transcutaeous splitting.
The vet who recommened the Estrogen Injections has only done it a coulple of times on other horses.
The vet who recommened the splitting, has done numerous estorogen injections with a 50/50 result. He no longer does estrogen injections, but recommends the splitting. Says there are no harmful side effects.
My question is: What is your opions of these two procedures. Are there any harmful side effects involved with the splitting?
I read an article by Atlata Equine Clinic, it stated that without tension from the medial patellar ligament, the patella becomes unstable within the frmoropatellar joint. They were talking about a Medial Patellar Desmotomy.
Question: Is Medial Patellar Desmotomy a complete cutting of the ligament?Or is it the same as Splitting, where thy go in with a needle and release the tension.
