I have a gelded buckskin quarter horse that is about 8 years old. I'm a beginner again (it has been better then 30 yrs since I rode last),and when I bought him I was told he was trained and would be great for me. I saw 2 other women ride him and I have riden him a couple of times. The problem is when a man rides him he will buck them off. He does not put his head way down and twist, it looks like he just decides "ok you're off" and he throws them. Oh one other thing it takes me a long time to catch him to put the halter on. Once I do get it on him he's great. As far as ground work he is wonderful, he will do anything I ask of him. He is a loving and gental horse as long as you don't ride him.

Does anyone have any ides for me. I love this guy and he is just beautiful, about 16 hands and built like a mac truck if you know what I mean.

I don't have much advice on how to stop him from bucking. I do believe that sometimes, a horse will prefer one sex to the other. I had a similar situation.
I had a gelding that I had since he was a colt. I could do anything with him on the ground. I had him broke and a first he was pretty good. After a while I couldn't ride him anywhere. He just refused and I got bucked off. My husband and brother -in-law could ride him anywhere.

As far as catching him. Do you have him in a pasture or is he in a smaller area? I was having the same trouble. I started locking him up at night and letting him out in the morning. In the morning I would pet him and if he let me approach him without issues, I would give him a treat. Now I can just call him and he comes running.
I make sure he doesn't get a treat unless he does something for me.

My suggestion would be to try natural horsemanship with him. Do you have an area where you can work with him one on one without him running across the pasture? If you don't the pasture will work it will just take longer. Pat Parelli has a wonderful program to help get a horses respect. The reason he runs from you is because he either sees you as a threat or sees you as work. Either way you need to make him want to be with you (or catch you as Pat puts it) If you have DirectTv channel 379 RFDtv has a bunch of Parelli programs on. Check your listing. And if you don't have satelite you can buy one of his books or some other natural type trainer. I have had tremendous success with this type of training! It's a great way to gain respect with a horse. That would probably solve your bucking problem too in the long run. Ground work is a major key to how a horse behaves under saddle! Good luck!! And good for you for getting back in the saddle after 30 years off!
