Does anybody use the supplement Weight Builder? A friend told me to try it, because I'm trying to fatten up my 18 y.o QH/Saddlebred who is a difficult keeper. If you do use Weight Builder, does it work? And would you recomend it? If you don't use Weight Builder, is there another kind of weight gain supplement that works and isn't over $25.00 a bucket?

Thanks:D.

I find it hard to believe that not one single person on this site uses Weight Builder for their horse. Can't some one please answer the question?

Hi Again!

I have tried a lot of supplements in my time.. and you know, to add weight I find the best thing is plain old Corn Oil. Try adding 1/2 cup to the feed twice a day. You can also add cane molasses to increase calories along with the corn oil. These things add calories in a concentrated form to the horse's diet.

A difficult keeper is a horse that usually has a high metabbolism and is often also a picky eater. This means every moutful of food the horse takes in needs to be the best quality feed you can get.

I would suggest adding either two-three flakes (about 10 pounds) of high quality Second Cutting alfalfa to the ration or using 3-5 pounds of alfalfa cubes in addition to the corn oil.

In creasing grain may be in the cards too, but grain needs to be fed in small amounts frequently and not in two big slugs a day. The corn oil and high quality hay are a better choice for adding calories.

Hi Again!

Ah, we keep running into each other over here, lol. I think we're the only two who actually come on here. I don't come to this site very often anymore. I've found a new horse forum where people actually post and talk! Imagine that, lol!!!:D:rolleyes::eek:

I've upped his grain (and included 6 oz. of Weight Builder in it), and increased the amount of hay he gets. I think it will help. Thanks for answering.

See ya later I'm sure....

The best thing I have used is Beet pulp. No chance for founder, hyperness, etc. It does tend to be a pain, due to you HAVE to soak it in water until it breaks down. Do NOT feed in normal pellet form/ or shredded without soaking it. It will choke your horse. However, it is a great way of putting weight on with no side effects, it is 100% safe if fed correctly, very inexpensive(dont know where you live but here it is about 10.00 for 50 pounds) It will last you at least 3 months, and adds extra water/fiber to his daily intake. For my TB gelding, I feed it cold in the summer and warm in the winter(to warm his tummy) Just mix with regular feed, or most will eat it plain. A small amount when added to water will expand to almost 4 times its starting amount. Hope this helps

That did help, thank you. How long do you soak the beet pulp for?
