I have a 15yr old Paint mare that goes lame on the left side after you warm her up. She has no heat or swelling in any leg. She will not take her left lead after you have warmed her up and becomes noticeably lame on the left front- head bob and limp. I ran race horse for years and worked on alot of injuries however this mares problem has me completely baffled.

Well I have a couple of questions for you about your horse
How long do you warm her up for?
Does she have any known injuries?
What type of riding are you doing with her?
If you aren't using her for compi***ion I would say give her a break for about 2 weeks. Everyday ice her legs . When you do ride her I would say a 15 minuete ride. On sand if you are able to ride on sand? Thus will stregthen her leg tendons and musles allowing her to endure. Take it slowly. Avoid tight circles or circles at all. Just walk and ligthly trot her for a couple of weeks. This lameness could be happening from many different things. She has previously had an injury that you may or may not know about and has caused some arthritis. She may be very weak in the legs and I sugggest that you always but bandages while riding event splint boots. She is getting slightl older. Even though I know 20 who still do eventing and saddle seat. This should deffintely help her. If you see some deformaties or differences in the shapes of her feet their could be something wrong such as founder, laminitsk, or white line disease. If it worsens then you should contact your vetrenarian. You don't nessecarily have to stop riding or excersising her all together. As long as you are not doing strenous work it cannot possibly hurt her. Try to take her on trail rides and out in the pasture alot. If it is arthritis work through it , it will eventually start to work its self out. If you leave her in the stall for long periods of time and she doesn't get enough excersise then that is definetly leading to trounble. Hope things work out!
