Pinal County is the center of the Sun Corridor, one of 10 megapolitan areas in the U.S. where demographers project the largest population growth to occur in the next decades. Ensuring that Pinal County remains sustainable and the region’s quality of life is enhanced is a key objective of the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan effort. Join us for a provocative discussion series with leading experts on topics related to growth and development in Arizona and Pinal County. Each Thursday evening, an important topic related to the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan will be discussed.

John McNamara is an Associate Vice President with DMJM Harris and has more than 34 years of experience in community planning, transportation planning and economic development. He is a certified planner, registered architect, and a nationally recognized expert in urban form planning that emphasizes sustainable growth, infill development, and urban revitalization, as well as the planning and design of high capacity roadway and transit corridors.

Pete Lima, PhD, PE
Lima & Associates
Pete Lima is President of Lima & Associates and has a strong background in transportation planning, traffic engineering, and Geographical Information Systems. His 40 years’ experience includes work in the private, public, and academic sectors. Dr. Lima has managed large transportation planning and modeling projects in Arizona, Nevada, and other states and has been involved in a number of transportation and corridor planning studies in Pinal County.

Jack Tomasik
Central Arizona Association of Governments
Jack Tomasik has been Central Arizona Association of Governments Planning Director since October 2005. Mr. Tomasik has built the CAAG Planning Department and developed original land, roads, and socioeconomic databases and projections for Pinal County, with the cooperation of CAAG member agencies. Prior to joining CAAG, Mr. Tomasik was Regional Development Manager for the Maricopa Association of Governments. Mr. Tomasik has consulted on more than 200 planning, economic, and projections projects for states, metro areas, counties, and cities and towns across the Western United States.

Judie Scalise
ESI Corporation
Judie Scalise is the founder of ESI Corporation, a real estate and economic development consulting firm. She has more than 27 years of professional experience in the areas of land economics, strategic planning, and economic development. A major focus of her work includes recommending supportable land uses based on a combination of the community’s vision and economic conditions. Ms. Scalise understands market dynamics and how to leverage opportunities to help a local government maximize revenue and build a fiscally sustainable economy, while creating the best possible future for its residents.

May 29: Water
How will the relationship between water and growth be addressed in Pinal County? This has been one of the most commonly asked questions during the year-long comprehensive planning effort. The expert panel will explore this relationship and offer opportunities to ensure Pinal’s future can be achieved.

Jack L. August, Jr., PhD
Barry Goldwater Center for the Southwest
Dr. Jack August serves as Executive Director of the Barry Goldwater Center for the Southwest, a non-profit archival and historical organization associated with all three Arizona state universities, and is a Visiting Scholar in Legal History with Snell & Wilmer L.L.P. He has served as historian and expert witness in the Natural Resources Section of the Arizona Attorney General’s Office where his work focused on Indian versus non-Indian water issues and state trust lands. Additionally, he has served as expert witness for Arizona State University, the City of Tempe, the City of Tucson, and private law firms representing clients with land and water rights claims.

George Fletcher
Replenishment Services LLC
George J. Fletcher is Founder, President and Chief Executive Officer of Replenishment Services, L.L.C. He has over 28 years of experience in water resources supply acquisition and management, water resources planning, water rights analysis/investigation; contract negotiation and administration; and project management. Mr. Fletcher serves municipal and privately held potable water providers, land development/home builders, irrigation districts, and power companies.

June 5: Sustainability
Sustainability is simply defined as ensuring that the needs of existing residents are met while not compromising future generations’ ability to meet their needs: a simple concept with complex implications. A panel of experts will explore sustainability and its relationship to Pinal County planning.

Grady Gammage, Jr.
Morrison Ins***ute, Arizona State University
Grady Gammage, Jr. is a part time academic, a practicing lawyer, an author, a sometime real estate developer and a former elected official. He thinks life is more interesting if you do lots of different things. In his academic role, Mr. Gammage is a Senior Fellow at ASU’s Morrison Ins***ute. His work there focuses on urban growth and development, quality of life, and local economic issues. He also teaches at the College of Law and at the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Mr. Gammage is the author of the book “Phoenix in Perspective” and numerous articles on land use and growth issues.

Jim Charlier
Charlier Associates, Inc.
Jim Charlier is a transportation planner based in Boulder, Colorado. His firm, Charlier Associates, Inc., provides consulting services to public and private clients throughout North America. Over the past three decades, Mr. Charlier has been at the forefront of efforts to redefine urban transportation planning to reflect “smart growth” and “sustainable mobility” goals. He served on the Transportation and Land Use Task Force of the Colorado Climate Action Plan and is providing ongoing technical services to numerous clients around the U.S. through the EPA’s Smart Growth Implementation Assistance Program.

Peggy Fiandaca, AICP
Partners for Strategic Action, Inc.
Peggy A. Fiandaca is President and founder of PSA, Inc, and specializes in visioning and goal setting, public involvement processes, and community planning. Ms. Fiandaca is a Certified Planner from the American Planning Association and has performed planning work throughout Arizona over the past 25 years. She has worked with nearly every community in Arizona providing her a strong understanding of the unique issues, opportunities, and challenges in the region. She currently serves as the Pinal County Comprehensive Plan Project Manager.
