You may have seen a recent story called "Strengthening the Herd". In this article, written July 7th, 2008, the issues that affect equestrians at Ft Tuthill is outlined, as well as similar issues across the State of Arizona. Not only are the freeze on the contracted fee structure for lessees mentioned in this article, but more importantly, the issue of the deferred maintenance.
The article particularly outlines the biggest weakness of horse owners & horselovers from all over, in that there is not enough unity among the ranks. If you compare this interest group to the soccer moms, the t-ball & baseball parents, or even the hikers & bicylcists, there is a notable difference in protecting what we love to do outside of our work. We are a silent minority when it comes to making our voice heard. However, this is not intended to beat ourselves up about this, it is only meant to make us aware of a situation that we have control of.
On that note, a small number of concerned individuals, who have called themselves the Coconino Horseman's Alliance, have pursued the local issues at Ft Tuthill, ongoing, for the past 9 months, in hopes of making a positive difference, for all equestrians & equestrian event spectators. We also feel that our efforts have partnered with & included the Pony Club & 4H members of the community, who have also had their interests jeopardized.
In what has seemed like some of our darkest hours, and at the point of coming to a crossroad in our goals, we have just received a letter from the Board of Supervisors, that has brought us light to our continued efforts over these past months, and we would like to share it with all of you. I have attached that letter for all of you to read as well-please do read it!
It is not a final solution, by any means, but it does tell us that our voice is starting to be heard. We want to thank all who have supported us, both financially, and with your words of support.
In addition, we want to encourage everyone to use Ft Tuthill, not only by going to events, but by riding the trails. We will show our user interest if we USE the park! It's a great place to ride, and you can plan a half day ride with some friends & roll in a picnic lunch as well! Go ride it!
The Coconino Horseman's Alliance has formalized itself, from being grassroots, to a local organization of elected officers, and looks forward to continued work on behalf of all equestrians here in the Flagstaff area, and perhaps, beyond, in the future.
Please stay with us in your support, and know that we would welcome your input anytime!
