Hi,

It sounds to me like you need to help of a good instructor or knowledgable friend. You shouldn't ride out alone, no matter how experienced you are, so find a friend who can go out riding with you. Your pony will follow another horse more easily. On these rides, gradually start taking the lead more and more, and eventually your pony should be more confident on his own. Horses are herd animals, so it is unnatural for them to be alone. Riding with a friend is much safer anyway, that way if something happens to one of you there is someone there to help. You say your neighbours have horses; maybe one of your neighbours will ride with you.

A lot of horses pull away when a bit is getting put in their mouth. So long as you can get the bit in and he doesn't make too much of a fuss afterwards, this isn't too much of a problem.

Good luck :)
