The Arizona State Horsemen’s Association
Not Just another Horse Group

Our Mission:
ASHA’s mission is “To Preserve, Promote and Protect the Arizona Equestrian Lifestyle”. Currently, we are an all-volunteer organization whose job is to represent the interests of all horse owners across the state whenever and wherever possible. We deal with land and access issues, are involved in education and communication and represent equine interests in all kinds of seminars, workshops, public meetings, and private appointments with politicians, national equine symposiums and more.

In 2008 that meant we represented Arizona Equestrian Interests at nearly 50 different venues.

It also means that we are the only equine organization in Arizona that not only represents the interests of our membership but that of all 60,000+ horse owners statewide.

Examples of ASHA’s important accomplishments for 2008?

A) We conducted the first Equine Summit ever held in the state of Arizona.
And it was a huge success as judged by its attendees. 60 Equine professionals from across the state representing horse breed organizations, attorneys, lobbyists, veterinarians, farriers, equine education faculty & students, tack and feed store owners, horse boarding facilities, horse trainers, show judges, horse trail coalitions, and all disciplines of riding from dressage to pleasure riding and everything in between were in attendance. It was held in Scottsdale on October 11, 2008.

The Objectives were:
1) Establish a base of influential Horse Representatives through which we begin the process of uniting the AZ Equine Community
2) Identify the resources necessary to successfully address the horse issues perceived to be the most important to all horse owners in the state.
3) Develop the action plans and follow up necessary to establish the power and influence of the Equine industry to resolve the issues we deem most important.

Many powerful ideas were presented as a result of the interest generated in each of the discussion groups. One example that we are currently working on is Permanent Equine Zoning. Coupled with a “Code of The West” it would preserve our private property right to keep our horses at home.

Another example of an idea that was presented was that we need to establish a process to better educate the general public and ourselves as to just how important horses are to our history, culture and economy.

The overall consensus of attendees was that the Arizona State Horsemen’s Association should not only represent all horsemen in the state but that all clubs, associations, businesses and individual horse owners in Arizona should be members.

B) We have established a presence and built relationships in Pinal and Maricopa counties through our attendance at planning and zoning workshops, seminars and meetings. Our opinions and expertise is sought before decisions are made that affect the equine community in both counties.

C) We have a very effective county representative Anne May in Cochise County. She has single handedly made our presence and influence felt politically and in the equine community and has established many important relationships.

The combined experience of the summit and 50 different venues we attended has propelled ASHA to another level of power and influence in the state. We now are at the threshold of much larger successes. But, to achieve that success we must have your financial and membership support.

You can help in one or more of several ways:
1) Renew or join ASHA and include a horse friend or neighbor
2) Help us raise funds to complete a new Equine Economic Impact Study, fund a special Arizona Equine License Plate, and to build a new go to horse owners web site for all equestrians in the state. Total cost is $250,000
3) Donate your time and talent to ASHA

With your support we are the greatest horse organization in the state, without it we are powerless to protect our beloved animals and the right to continue to ride and keep them on our property.
