Colorado Horseman Rally at State Capitol
Denver - Horsemen from all parts of Colorado came together at the State Capitol on Tuesday, January 20th, to support efforts by the horse industry to pass legislation designed to revitalize the economics of the horse industry in Colorado. An overflow crowd estimated to exceed 200 met with top executives from national equine breed organizations and Colorado legislators.
The primary discussion was HB 1152, a bill sponsored by Representative Jerry Sonnenberg (R) from Sterling and Deputy Senate Majority Leader Lois Tochtrop (D) from Thornton. This bipartisan bill will modernize horse racing simulcasting and dedicate revenue to the Colorado horse industry for equine related economic development and Coloradoʼs community colleges.
The American Quarter Horse Association was represented by incoming president, Jim Helzer and Executive Director of Racing, Trey Buck. Joining these were the Jockey Clubʼs Executive Vice President and Executive Director, Dan Fick, American Paint Horse Association President, Jim Corbin and Arabian Horse Association Executive Vice President Glenn Petty. These executive also attended a briefing on horse racing the previous day at Arapahoe Park in Aurora, Colorado. Horsemen from all breeds racing in Colorado heard from the thoroughbred and quarter horse executives about current issues in horse racing.
The horse industry in Colorado is significant. Perhaps one of the largest such industries in any state in the nation, rivaled only by California, Kentucky, Florida, Texas and Oklahoma. Colorado is a major player in the equine world. Coloradoʼs horse industry has a total economic impact of $1.6 billion. Besides its large economic impact, the western heritage lifestyle it represents is part of Coloradoʼs heritage and appeal to the million of tourist visiting the state each year.
The Colorado horse industry believes HB 1152 will have a positive impact on every county in Colorado and build a stronger and growing horse industry. The industryʼs proposal is entirely self funded by the racing segment of the industry, while adding revenue to the state without requesting any state funding. The Colorado horse industry is an economic winner and their proposal is projected to improve the economics for the state and the industry.
