ASHA SUPPORT NEEDED FOR 2009
Listed below are the types of work we need to get done in 2009 to accomplish our mission of promoting and protecting the AZ Equestrian Lifestyle now and into the future. Our goals for 09 include more effective communication and education within the equine community and the general public at large. We also need to prevent the loss of equestrian land use and our private property rights.
Our goals are aggressive and will require a great deal of effort to accomplish, but with your help and more just like you who are willing to sacrifice their time, we will grow ever stronger in numbers and success.
Our new lobbyist will help. Our newly approved 501C3 will help. But more important is how we “leverage” our resources to make all these things happen. That’s where you come in. Without the help of many more of you, it cannot be accomplished.
For a more detailed explanation and if you are interested in helping grow the strongest Equine community in the country, please contact me at info@allabouthorses.com
(We will gladly provide training i.e. P & Z research. Nothing below is rocket science. If we can do it, you can too.)
1) Assistant to the Director of Communications: Our current director is planning to retire December 2010. Her historical knowledge, contacts, and relationships with equestrians and preservationists are an invaluable resource that must be preserved. You will work with her to acquire this information and write letters etc. Much of the info will be passed via email and phone. Personal introductions will be a part of the process as will be attendance at various public meetings in support of equestrian issues. Estimated Time commitment 2-3 hours per week.
2) Create power point presentations: This person will help us create presentations that we can take “on the road” to educate horse owners and the general public. It may also include converting a written fundraising presentation (that has previously been developed) to power point. Attendance at ASHA meetings is not required. Estimated time commitment: 6-8 hours per month
3) Staff ASHA Booth at Shows: This will require education on our part so you can discuss the ASHA story at shows. You will receive a steady stream of email communication following training so you are up to date. This job is not for shy horsewomen/men. You must be assertive to get our message out there. Note I said assertive, not aggressive. Estimated time commitment is a minimum of 1 entire per day per show at 6 shows per year. (Normally on weekends). A board member may be with you to assist if available. We plan to have 2 ASHA reps present at all times. Attendance at meetings not required.
4) Internet Research: We have a need for several types of research and thus several of our members to do it. Examples: Directories of P & Z Directors, BOS, City councilmen, BOA, State legislators and other gov’t employees at all levels who make decisions that can or will affect us. In addition, we need one person in each city, county, town or municipality to act as a watchdog for changes in Zoning ordnances and any public meeting notices that would involve equestrian issues. Estimated time commitment after initial training is 1 hour each week. Watch dogs have to be consistent so as not to miss anything. Attendance at meetings not required.
5) ASHA Reps: Our goal is to have a rep in every city and county in the state. Reps will be good communicators & leaders under the guidance and direction of the board. All reps will have the ability to keep their emotions in check and have excellent people skills. ASHA training will be provided. Reps will be the “go to” people in their area. Estimated Time commitment on average will probably grow to 4+ hours per week. The difference with this job is it is an on demand function some of the time. You may also have other assistants or coordinators that work under your leadership that perform a specific function i.e. one person who develops a relationship with the Board of Adjustments, or is talented at getting horsemen out to attend public hearings etc. (We want local politicians at all equestrian functions). ASHA board meeting attendance is not required but may be desirable.
6) Annual Equine Summit: Planning for the 2nd summit in October must start now to continue the effort to unite the horse community in this state. A committee will do this work therefore multiple committee members will be necessary. Estimated time commitment: 1 meeting per month until August, then tasks, meetings as necessary to conduct a successful summit. Committee Chair must be a 2008 summit attendee.
7) Marketing & PR person: to write press releases, contact media types & search for cost effective methods to increase awareness of ASHA & our mission. Estimated time commitment as needed but, should average 2+ hours per week
8) Fund Raising: Selling or fundraising experience would be ideal but not required. Also, horsemen with influential contacts desired. Estimated time commitment: 8+ hours per month
