National Day of the Cowboy Resolution Passes

The National Day of the Cowboy resolution has again been sponsored in the U.S. House of Representatives by Arizona’s U.S. Congresswoman, Gabrielle Giffords. H. Res. 322 encourages Americans to set aside the fourth Saturday in July as a day to celebrate their pioneer heritage and cowboy culture.

The National Day of the Cowboy nonprofit organization continues to work to inform people about the resolution and to encourage participation in its celebration, through education, the arts, and community events. One of our goals is to see the resolution passed in perpetuity. To increase the base of support for the resolution in 2009, we’ve engaged volunteers around the country who enlist sponsors for passage in their state legislatures. Thanks to those volunteers, the Cowboy Day has now been proclaimed in New York, Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. In addition, Michael Martin Murphey has engaged Senator Dan Kapanke in the Wisconsin legislature and Barb Richhart has taken on the task of finding a sponsor in Colorado, while Lindalee Green works to line one up in California. Bob Orth has a commitment from his Ohio Senator, Bill Harris, and we also have a commitment from Senator Rios in Arizona. We have other dedicated volunteers seeking sponsors in Florida, Louisiana, and Michigan. Wyoming’s U.S. Senator, Enzi, sponsors the same resolution in the U.S. Senate using a different title.

The National Day of the Cowboy flag now flies in twenty-four states and four countries, including with our soldiers, The Desert Cowboys, in Iraq and Afghanistan. We support this group of soldiers and DOD civilians by having ‘cowboy’ things sent to them, like western music CDs and the Chronicle of the Old West newspaper. The Cowboy flag also flies with our friends, the British Cowboys, at their ranch in London. In 2008, the National Day of the Cowboy flag was carried to the International Space station aboard the Discovery Space shuttle by NASA Commander Mark Kelly, taking our old frontier into the new frontier.

Once again, huge celebrations are planned all over America, while the British Cowboys from Western Trails Ranch in London are planning their own NDOC event in 2009, as is Master Gardener Bob Priddle in Wales. People all over the country and the world are involved in preserving cowboy heritage, our cowboy heritage, including devotees in Canada, France, Italy, Australia and Argentina. The Day of the Cowboy is a wonderful opportunity to share in celebration together. Our legendary (and of course partly mythical) cowboy, is one of the cultural icons of America which many world citizens still hold in high regard. The potential for building national and international community around the National Day of the Cowboy is unlimited.

We encourage you to visit www.nationaldayofthecowboy.org to learn more about how you can help build the momentum for permanent passage of this holiday and how your community or organization can celebrate our pioneer heroes and cowboy culture this year on Saturday, July 25, 2009, the National Day of the Cowboy.
