Livestock Ordinance Update

I have been getting a lot of email and phone calls about the effort underway to revise Mesa's livestock ordinance. While there are several changes underway trying to make it easier for people who enjoy raising livestock to participate in this activity, they have not yet been passed by the City Council. Below are the proposed changes:

1) The raising of 4H and FFA project animals will be allowed without permit or regulation.
2) A new animal point system will be implemented that acknowledges small and large animals and incremental lot sizes for keeping of the animals.
3) No swine will be allowed.
4) Sanitary regulations are being updated to reflect best practices in the industry.
5) The minimum lot size for keeping livestock is being lowered to 35,000 square feet, unless it is strictly forbidden by an HOA.

Part of the proposal is to raise the minimum lot size for the keeping of fowl to 35,000 square feet for uniformity. The concern was raised about roosters and their tendency to disturb neighborhoods early in the morning. Discussions are underway to remove this requirement from egg laying chickens. Prohibitions on roosters may remain. Either way, I would love to hear from you on your feelings. I am inclined t o have no minimum lot size for egg laying chickens. Let me know what you think!

Finally, if you have friends or neighbors that don't receive this newsletter, I would encourage you to forward it to them or ask them to sign up by sending me an email with "Add me to the newsletter" in the subject line.

Thanks!
