This place is crazy busy. There is no doubt we are still the fastest growing county in Arizona.

H1N1 remains a hot topic throughout the county. We’ve seen almost 100 influenza cases so far this year. Last year at this time we had less than five. I received my regular flu shot from the good folks at the community center in Queen Valley this month. If you are high risk, definitely get your H1N1 vaccination right away!

Gold Canyon had their annual Safety Fair at the Bashas’ parking lot. It was a great showcase of the professionals, paid and volunteer, who keep us all safe. Special thanks to AJFD Chief Dan Campbell and his team.

East Valley Partnership hosted a Nuclear Energy Forum that discussed Arizona’s nuclear options. It’s too early to tell, but Pinal County is a probable location…we’ll see. Pinal County continues to explore all renewable energy options as we look to sustainable community models.

I had the opportunity to host a meeting with Superstition Search and Rescue and the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. There are a number of changes taking place. It has always been my desire to protect the citizens who venture into the Superstitions. Thanks to all who give their time and expertise to that endeavor.

Speaking of the Superstitions, we had a community meeting to discuss new forest access in the Mining Camp Area. Thanks to State Park, Forest and community members who continue to work towards a solution.

In a historical move, San Tan Valley Today launched their first issue this month to over 45,000 homes and businesses. Local news is critical to Arizona’s newest community. Check out www.santanvalleytoday.com

The Arizona State Fair is in town. It was good to take the kids to see the livestock. As Arizonans, I think we’re losing the rural feel we once enjoyed. We also had the chance to see the Stone Temple Pilots…very cool.

This month saw the unveiling of Florence’s newly renovated McFarland State Park. The historic building is a fantastic example of our colorful heritage. Now we search for funds to keep this treasure open to the public.

Tucson’s Republican Club hosted an amazing event at the Pima Air Museum. The event honored WWII veterans and was attended by over 100 veterans. We lose thousands of our WWII vets every day.

Apache Junction’s Police D.A.R.E. program is selling Suns basketball tickets throughout the season. I took the boys to a game. The team looked good. Hopefully we can pull it together this season. No Shaq this year…

The city of Yuma hosted a County Supervisor conference for the state’s 55 County Supervisors. We discussed new and proposed legislation that impacts counties throughout Arizona. County budgets are ripe targets for state cuts.

Tucson was the backdrop for a memorable event at which I had the honor of congratulating six of PCSO’s newest sworn officers at their academy graduation. I’m proud to welcome six new families to the county team.

The annual Harvest Festival event was a big success. Todd and Tuni House brought together a great group of dignitaries, guests and volunteers to raise thousands of dollars and food donations for Paws 4 Life. Great job and I’m looking forward to next year.

The best event of the month was courtesy of Apache Junction City council member, Chip Wilson. Chip hosted a horseback ride through the beautiful foothills of the Superstitions with multiple State Legislators and dignitaries. It was a great way to show off the Superstitions, talk about horse owner issues and state trust land reform issues. (Note: This was provided by the Arizona Horse Council and President Chip Wilson)

This was a tough month for our employees in the Treasurer’s office. Citizens sometimes take out their tax frustrations on our clerks. This month’s employee of the month is Karen Johnson. Thanks for your professionalism and dedication during the toughest of times.

Forward this to your friends…
