WARNING HORSE OWNERS TO BECOME GUARDIANS

January 4, 2010

Steve,

I just read a somewhat disturbing article in this month's Paint Horse Journal.

"There is a grassroots movement afoot urging legislators at all levels to redefine "owners" as "guardians" in animal-related laws and regulations. The state of Rhode Island made the change in 2001 (the only state to do so) and communities in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Indiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Ontario, Canada, have jumped on the bandwagon. . . . guardianship . . . imposes responsibility for protecting the legal rights and the best interests of someone else . . . If animals become wards of their guardians, it will be difficult to argue that sales, breeding, competitions, pleasure riding, use as research subjects and humane euthanasia are in the animals' best interests."

This is a disturbing trend. I imagine you will have an agenda to follow at the mtg., but if there's an opportunity to present other topics/ideas, perhaps this issue could be discussed. I'm concerned that PETA and other groups will attempt to make life very difficult for us as horse owners.
