I've got an older mare who, for the first time in her life, has thrush. She normally wears shoes in the summer and with this rainy weather I'm sure that didn't help. she's back to barefoot and i've heard that a combinationof lysol and water is a good mix to soak the foot in.

Any other homemade remedies or just any method that works well to quickly treat this?

I've done 50 water and 50 clorox (sp?)

Careful with bleach and Kopertox which we use, too deep thrush and it could kill the good flesh beneath.
Pine tar helps my girls it has some anti fungal properties.
It sometimes is trial and error to see what works.

The main thing is to get the foot dry. Of course, this is difficult in outside horses in severely lengthy wet weather patterns.

Trimming the dead/rotting flesh (debride) as the bacteria responsible for the disease hides in there.

Wash the foot with soap and water.. and get it really clean.. use a scrub brush after you opick the foot out. Dry it and then use whatever treatment you are using. Chlorox is OK but the Cl molecule is very active and tends to bind to any organic material very quickly which renders it ineffective.

Treatment has to be twice a day to be effective.
