you havent really out lined the problem properly . . . but i will try and help ...
1.It could be sweet itch , has your horse been rubbing and rolling exccesively?

2. It maybe an allergy to something ..have you washed him in new shampoo lately?

3.Has your horse suffered any trauma recentley either in that area or elswhere or any mental stress?... that can cause excessive hair loss

4.Is your horse out with others????? mutual grooming maybe the problem one horse on a yard i used to manage lost his whole tail and no one new why until i witnessed the horse who he was out with was eating it!!!!!!

i cant think of anything else right now but if i do ill let u know !!!!

good luck x x xfiona

Is the hair loss clumpy almost as if the horse is shedding large clumps. Does your horse have a thick hair coat? Have you had a lot of moisture lately? Has he been sweating a lot under the saddle? These are all things that can cause what they call rain rot. It is fairly easy to treat. You will probably not be able to ride until it is healed, riding just makes it worse. First you will need to clip the area of hair. Then shampoo the area with a Betadine shampoo. Lather well and let sit for 10-15 minutes and rinse well. If you live in an area that is cold this time of year try to do this at least once a week in warmer climates every couple of days. If you live where it is cold you may want to put a clean sheet or blanket to protect the shaved area from the cold. This should clear it up. If there are any areas once you shave that are open sores apply a triple antibiotic ointment (like neosporane) once to twice a day to that area. In severe case you may have to put him on an oral antibiotic from your vet. Good luck and hope this helps. Let me know

Well, hair loss, well I let the pros deal with the whys, but I can deal with the what to do with's, I save my horse's hair from each combing. Someday when I have plenty gathered, I will make my own authentic horse hair angora hat, sweater, vest, or what ever I can make, this way I have him with me forever, also NAI's (Native American Indians) use horse hair for wigs, beading threads, and even rope making. Now I know your question was for the why the hair loss, but at least I can give you some ideas what to do with the lost hair lol.:p :D BTW Wakinyan Ska is Lakota for White Lightning, my horse's name. A cremello quarter horse, blue eyes.
