Mainly to make sure the horse is drinking enough water.
Dehydration makes a sick horse sicker.
By monitoring the water intake *25 gallons a horse a day* you can tell how much a day the horse is drinking.

this is true for all animals/people: allong with monitoring the watter intake one should monitor the urination as well. It is verry common for some animals to die within 24 hours fallowing lack of urination. They die of toxisity.
If your babys arn't feeling good you or someone you TRUST should watch them verry closly.
horses should avoid extreemly cold watter too (collic) in case you didn't know.;)
is your horse sick?

The biggest reason and probably the most important medically is When a horse does not drink enough water yes they become dehydrated. Then the horses body starts drawing water from where ever it can get it which is usually the gut (intestines) when water is drawn from here the manure becomes dry and horses form what they call impactions ( constipation), this causes the horse to colic in some form. Mild cases might be corrected by simply having the vet tube them with mineral oil and water. More servere cases will require the horse to go to the hospital and be put on IV Fluids to rehydrate the gut. Worse case is the horse has to have colic surgery to empty the gut. Yes the other reasons are all good, but preventing colic is the main reason.
