First Aid Kit for The Barn.


Place the contents in a large plastic Fishing Tackle Box that can be found in many discount stores. Try to get one with a tight seal to prevent dust and moisture.

Label it with tape in a Red Cross configuration and keep out of the reach of children and/or any animal intruders.

Contents:

  • Plastic digital rectal thermometer with an 18” string tied through the hole in the end. Normal temp is 100 +/- 1 degree. Normal Temp for Foals is 101+/- 1 degree.
  • Bandage Scissors or plastic protective bandage knife
  • Stethoscope (inexpensive from a discount drug chain). Normal Heart Rate is 40+/- 6 beats per minute. A count of one beat sounds like a lub-dub. Normal respiration is 16 per minute.
  • Vetrap 3 Rolls.
  • Gauze Squares 3” x 3” or larger. If not available in stores, you may have to purchase from your Vet.
  • Vaseline (handy for oozing below wounds).
  • Antiseptic wound ointment and spray. (Nitrofurazone).
  • Hydrogen Peroxide.
  • Betadine Scrub.
  • Betadine Liquid.
  • Latex Gloves.
  • Flashlight + extra batteries.
  • Saline Solution To make your own mix one teaspoon salt in one pint sterile water.
  • Sterile Cotton. At least one roll.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol (rubbing alcohol).
  • Forceps or Tweezers.
  • Epsom Salts. May be used for foot abscesses. Add to warm water until it no longer dissolves.
  • Disposable Diaper or Sanitary Napkins.
  • Hoof Pick.
  • Farriers Rasp.
  • Duct Tape.
  • Bute Paste or Banamine Paste.
  • Miscellaneous medications and ointments previously prescribed by your vet. Before using consult with your vet. Make absolutely certain that you know what to use these for and that they have not passed any expiration date for useage.
  • Hoof Knife.
