Dr. William A. Schurg is a Professor of Animal Sciences with a joint professorship appointment in the department of Veterinary Sciences and Microbiology and the state's Horse Specialist at the University of Arizona. He received his B.S. in animal science from Purdue University. As an instructor and graduate research assistant in animal science at Oregon State University he obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in animal/horse nutrition. He joined the faculty of the University of Arizona in 1978.
Schurg began the horse program at the University of Arizona in 1978 with a single horse and has developed a very active horse program which includes both Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses that are used primarily for teaching over 300 undergraduates each year. Dr. Schurg has revised the equine sciences option in Animal Sciences which now has 9 equine science related courses.
He has been recognized for his teaching and advising accomplishments by receiving numerous awards, examples include: The University of Arizona College of Agriculture's prestigious Outstanding Professor Award and the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Western Section American Society of Animal Science. Dr. Schurg successfully completed the equine examination given by the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists to achieve PAS status and later achieved ARPAS Board Certification as a Charter Member and Diplomate of the American College of Animal Nutrition.
When not on the main campus, Dr. Schurg can be found giving talks and seminars on many aspects of equine nutrition, equine evaluation and facility design and management throughout the state of Arizona. He serves as a consultant for several professional journals and to many horsemen throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico or at home taking care of his own Quarter Horses and managing a breeding, boarding and training facility in Tucson.
