For Dr Sales (April 2005)
Thank you for your response. I took Star (my mare) to the vet on Friday because I could tell something was wrong. The baby was still alive and her cervix was open. Her water broke while we were at the vet's. He checked her and said we had to get her to Lone Star Park Equine Hospital in Dallas area for a c-section and said two hours was critical. From the length of the drive until they had her uterus open was probably three hours. We lost the foal - he was a beautiful tobiano colt but was stillborn. He had a condition called wryneck. His neck was so turned over a front leg that he was presenting the full length of his face. The side of his face lying on his leg was compressed. I lost my little boy but I have my mare thanks to her vet recognizing there was a big problem. My mare is doing well after the surgery. You vets have my admiration. I watched the surgery through a glass and was amazed at what could be done. They were also kind to bring the colt out so I could see him. It was something I needed to do so I could know what he would have looked like.
Again, thanks for your response. I just had a filly on Tuesday and she is healthy. But now I will worry if this condition will happen again.

Thank you Dr Sales for your speedy response.
Your advice and thoughts have been very helpful. I decided to watch my mare closely for a few days and put grain on the ground as advised. There has been no sign of any discharge and she seems well and is eating happily. I think you were right that she had probably choked.
This is the first time I have used "Ask a Vet" and will most definitely use this service again in the future. I feel you gave excellent advice and diagnosis and having several possible explanations helped me to use my judgment to decide which was the most likely.
Thank you again! Wonderful service!
Kind Regards
Alexa

Thank you very much and yes my Dr doesn't want her to gain too much right now. She is eating well and things are going well ...Dr says she is doing great under the circumstance. She seems to be healing fast.
She's a really good girl. Dr is here again now. Bye. Thank You.

Thank you very much for your reply, I did have an idea about this and I am very grateful for you're confirming it. Thank you very much again. Will it be ok for me to keep you informed on this situation?
Hello Dr. Sales: (May 2005)
Thanks about the picture; he was sticking his tongue out for me, so made it easy on my part. I did have the vet out and it was thrush. We are treating it with Gentian Violet, he also said we could use Collidal Silver, but so far the Gentian Violet is working. The actual white thrush is already gone; I will treat him for a few more days though. Thanks so much for your help and advice!

Thank you so much for the advice. I have decided to pass on this "Good" deal. What do they say? "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"---lol. If I knew he could be rideable--but I really have my doubts. Thanks for your time.

Dear Dr Sales: (May 2005)
I've been doing some research while I've kept him in over the last few days and today was the first day out since he laid down. I put him out from 10am and brought him in at 4pm. He came in and laid down for about 5 mins then got up again. He did this 3 times over an hour and then seemed fine once again. The whole time he was in I monitored what he ate and he seemed ok but not 100%. He prefers to eat haylage and just nibbles at his hay. He is passing urine and going to the toilet fine and they are not so loose. I have read about horses with similar symptoms. In fact there was one horse that sounded just like mine and apparently was diagnosed with a gastric ulcer. Would I do my horse harm if I gave him vitamin B10 (can this be purchased) and a product named gastroguard to alleviate his discomfort and see over a short time if there was an improvement?
I have phoned my vet before with colic symptoms and he was much worse than this but did recover by the next morning. The vet just asked me to monitor him over two hourly intervals rather than coming out at what he thought were early stages, I suppose if in doubt call the vet!!
Thanks for your reply.
