For Heather Holmes (August 2006)
Thanks for responding!
I also believe that I need to teach him to be collected better, he doesn't keep his head right. Any advice on that?
Thanks!!
Gina

For Dr Kimberly Gryl (August 2006)
Thank you. I have had another look at it and have decided against it as its anus is also a little bulging so decided to steer clear of it as the potential for problems in that area was high. Once again thank you so much for getting back to me with advice and information. Thanks. Maria.

For Mark Sheridan (August 2006)
Thanks for writing back. I grew up around horses and have been around a few stallions before. My friend gave him to me because she didn't know how to handle him: someone gave him to her because they were moving and couldn't keep him. He actually has stopped with the nipping thing and hasn't reared up again since that first day. We are working with him everyday. I plan on getting him cut because I have a 20 yr old mare and don't want to have to worry about anything. I will probably look into a trainer for him as it has been along time since I broke a horse and I am not as young as I use to be. Thank you for your advice and time.
Beverly

Thanks, Dr. Sales (October 2006)
I appreciate the time and consideration you have given me. The old mare is doing just great. The vet said to ride her (lightly), have fun and love her. She said that we were just "maintaining" her health and keeping her at optimal peak level. I never was a believer in the acupuncture but I will be the first to testify that it changed her life...within moments. She said she would have her good days and her bad just like the rest of us. She is still my best friend after all these years :)

Thank you so much for your response.
The mare seems to have them when she is more than 50 feet away from the barn or when there is activity around her. As soon as she returns to the barn her breathing becomes normal within a couple of minutes. Again there is no fever; as a matter of fact she has LOTS of energy. The breathing is so bad her eyes start to bug....
Thanks Again!
Heather

For Dr Gryl (October 2006)
This filly does lie down a lot - but most colts do, so we hadn't thought much about it. When she was only a week or so old, we noticed her pawing at the round pen panels. At the time we just thought she was playing and liked to hear the metallic sound it made, but looking back I'm thinking she may have been having pain in those front legs, with the tendons being so tight. I do think she is slowly showing improvement, thank goodness, and our vet thinks she'll be all right with time. She doesn't have an actual deformity, it isn't that noticeable. Just a bit of weakness/tightness in the tendons. We appreciate your interest and your expert advice! You must love horses as much as we do. This filly, Harley, is a sweetheart, always wanting to be scratched and loved on. I just want her to be 100 percent healthy. I think I worry more about her than I do my grandkids.
Thanks again - Lana

Thank you very much for your help, I greatly appreciate the info.

For Dr Sales (October 2006)
They are thinking that she has EPM or West Nile. We did the blood test for West Nile; the one for EPM is too costly for us financially. We may treat her if she has West Nile, however, the vet only gives her a 30% chance of full recovery and I don't want her to just be stuck in a pen the rest of her life. It's been a rough week; she's such a lovely mare full of life.
Thanks
Jess

For Dr Sales (August 2006)
Thank you very much for your answer. This is the same answer I've gotten from 3 other equine vets and an equine nutritionist. Funny how that kind of bad information travels in the horse world!
