For Dr. Gryl (October 2006)
Thank you for answering my inquiry - even though it may not be what I really wanted to hear! We sure hope this filly straightens up by herself and doesn't have to have surgery. She is such a well-built, strong looking filly, all but her front legs. However, they do seem to be showing some improvement. We notice her knees shaking and buckling forward a bit more when she's in the stall. Seems like when she's outside with her mother, it is barely noticeable. Maybe because she's too busy running, jumping, etc. My husband also noticed the filly seems to be a little stiff in the front legs after she's been laying down for quite a while, or in the mornings. We had never heard of carpal valgus, even though we have had horses for 50 years. I guess we've been lucky. I will talk to my vet.
Thank you again...Vannie

Thanks for the information. My vet had not encountered it either. We came upon an article in a recent The Horse issue - very timely for our situation. We were quite at a loss as it is so unusual. Again, thanks!

For Janelle Nelson (October 2006)
Thanks so much for writing back to me. We are signing her up for a place that teaches four-year-olds. She is obsessed with horses. She loves them. She imitates them. She has like 3 stick horses and rides them all. It’s very sweet.
We’d love to turn it into a family outing. It’s a great idea.
Thanks so much again,
Sonya

Hi Dawn, (October 2006)
Okay, that makes sense. So if I am seeing this in a 10-year-old horse then besides genetics, he could be older than they say he is, a bit dehydrated and could use a better diet. We are leasing a horse from a YMCA camp during their off season, an inexpensive and temporary way for us to see how horse ownership will feel. He is very mellow but very well trained and goes off nicely by himself. I thought he was a bit thin, not bad, and it has been so hot around here. The horses get a lot of trail riding in so he might just need a better diet and a little rest. He gets a vet check before he comes to us so we can see about a few things. I am recovering from spine surgery and I want to see if I can handle having a horse again. My 9y/o daughter is learning to ride and I can teach her about horse care, ground work and ride him. A together thing for us to do. My previous horse didn't have this area above his eyes, but he was a bit overweight (not good either I know). If all goes well I will pro bably look into a gaited horse for a smoother ride. Anyway I thank you for your time.
Many Thanks
Dana P

For Herb Richardson (October 2006)

Heather, (For Heather Holmes December 2006)
Thank you so much for your reply and your advice. I will keep working with him, and do as you suggested. It's nice to know that you don't think he's too old to re-train. Thank you again,
Julienne (and Rico)
