“Do crops hurt horses or don’t they?”

Do crops hurt horses or don’t they I believe they do but are you able to tell me for sure?

Riding Crop

Dr. Jack Sales’ Answer:

Hi Stacy. The use of a crop (whip) on a horse can be painful if used in the wrong way. When used properly they are thought to cue the horse or get the horse’s attention without hurting the horse. They are normally used in a tapping motion in order to cue the horse, get their attention, or encourage them. Proper use of the crop should be coordinated with and practiced with each individual mount, and individualized to the discipline in which you are riding as well.
