Chronic Leg Wound

“My horse has had an infection in his front right leg for over a month. “…

We have been treating it aggressively with IM injections, oral antibiotics and my vet has injected the area twice. It does not get worse, but it is not better. He is also on ulcer medication. What would you suggest me to do?

Dr. Jack Sales’ Answer:

Hi Emily,

When a leg wound becomes chronic (does not heal and continues to drain) it is very possible that either there is a foreign object deep within the wound, or the wound has caused deep bone infection or what is sometimes called a bone sequestra and surgical excision (removing the dead and infected bone surgically or removing the foreign object) is the only way to resolve the problem. To diagnose a bone infection or sequestration, an x ray exam of the area will be necessary. If this is negative, then surgical exploration of the wound and excision of dead tissue and/or a foreign body is indicated. I hope this helps and good luck.
