” she had a clear Coggins report from the sale barn, but she has suddenly started coughing after she eats or drinks”…
I just took on an 8 month old foal, she had a clear Coggins report from the sale barn, but she has suddenly started coughing after she eats or drinks. She was half starved and beaten by some mares when I got her. Do I need to be concerned about the coughing?

Yes, any time a horse coughs it should be investigated. You should discuss a deworming program with your veterinarian, and a nutrition program, if you have not already done so. Some of the parasitic lifecycle includes a migratory path through the lungs, which can cause coughing, among other illnesses. I hope this helps. You will find it so rewarding to bring her along and see a tremendous change! Congratulations!
