Respiratory

“I believe my horse has ingested quite a bit of dust while sleeping or eating in her pasture.”…

She has developed a terrible deep cough that didn’t present itself the other day for the vet. Is there something I can do to help her? This is day 4 and it is getting worse. She can’t be ridden as she coughs constantly.

Dr. Jack Sales’ Answer:

Hi Cheryl,

If this cough suddenly appeared it would more likely be caused by an upper respiratory virus that the horse has contracted. These virus infections usually cause a cough that will last about 5 to 7 days and usually goes away on its own in about 10 days to 2 weeks. Exercise would make it worse, so it should be restricted until the horse has fully recovered. If this cough does not get better over the next few days, I could only suggest that you have the Vet recheck your horse. There are sometimes cough medicines that you can purchase at a tack shop or feed store that can be helpful to control the cough. This medication is usually administered in the feed or water. I hope this helps and good luck.
